Abstract:

Consists of 34 letters written to the artist Bernard Zakheim from members of his family. Many of them were written while Bernard Zakheim lived in the Western United States, and they provide a compelling testimony to his futile attempts to get members of his family living in Poland out of Europe before the onset of World War Two and the advent of the Holocaust. Letters appear to be in Yiddish and Polish. One letter has never been opened.

Bernard Zakheim was born in Poland in 1898, and studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at the Polish National Academy of Fine Art. After fighting in World War I, he immigrated to San Francisco in 1920 to work as a sculptor and muralist. Zakheim worked on federally funded art projects in San Francisco through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and is well know for his murals at the Jewish Community Center, the Alemany Health Center, UCSF, and Coit Tower. During World War II, many of Zakheim's family members were killed during the Nazi Holocaust.
